Doctor diagnosed me with asthma last Monday, after six months of shortness of breath. He put me on 10mg montelukast Sod, and gave me an albuterol inhaler.

So who here has asthma, and what do you do to control it?
Who has been diagnosed with asthma later in life(after childhood) and who has had asthma go away?
Could asthma cause anxiety attacks or vice versa? How about asthma being stress related?

I may go for a second opinion after my 30 day prescription is up, if I don't get better. I don't have any refills on it, and don't know if that was intentional of the doc or not.

I was a SEVERE asthmatic from childhood until just a few years ago. I grew up in a household with cigarette smoking and cats, both things that I'm allergic to. Even though I had asthma, I decided to smoke. I smoked for 14 years. I was on both albuterol every four hours and Advair once a day. I thought I was destined to be an asthmatic the rest of my life.

I was hospitalized with pneumonia more times than I could count, I got bronchitis several times a year, I caught every cold that went around -- I was a miserable wreck.

In April 2009 I quit smoking. Within a year and a half, my severe asthma symptoms gradually subsided. I have had no symptoms since around the last quarter of 2010. I hardly ever catch a cold that lasts for more than a couple of days and I have not been on antibiotics in at least three years.

My best advice to you is to get allergy tested, because I'll bet money that what you're experiencing is allergenic in nature. You don't just "develop" asthma, I don't believe. I was one of the most severe cases and I'm completely asthma free today.

Vitamin D3 and magnesium are big ones in keeping asthma and allergic reactions at bay. I would do all you can to find triggers and try to treat this naturally. Albuterol isn't good for your adrenals or cardiac system.

Just my .02.

It's definitely in the works to nip this in the bud, and not be on any meds. I'm in the switch to a new/younger neurologist for my epilepsy(petite malt seasures/staring spells) which hasn't been an issue/under control for 13+ years, so this will be an issue I bring up.

Funny thing is that I started to notice the breathing issues after I quit smoking in August. Though I was never a heavy smoker/ on and off smoker for 4-5 years. I have no allergies, but the last 2 year's pollon has begun to bother me. I will def bring up the allergy test when I go to see a breathing specialist.

They say humans go through allergy cycles. It's always best to know for sure. Best of luck to you in finding an answer for this.

Don't you smoke a lot of weed? That can't be good for it.. I know losing fat and doing cardio helped my friend with asthma.

I smoke daily, but this has been switched to vaporizing the last 2 months, with only the occasional combusting. My breathing issues was the main reason for the switch. Oh, and the first couple months of my heavy breathing/breath shortness I was clean from pot for personal and work reasons. It definitely weighed on my mind though.

Thank you. Now I must go spread some reputation around.

Here are the Life Extension Foundation recommendations: Life Extension Suggestions - Butterbur, Rosmarinic Acid, Quercetin, Probiotics, Lycopene
(http://www.lef.org/protocols/respiratory/asthma_09.htm#AnchorSug)

I find them to be pretty reliable for nutritional recommendations. The one thing I would add to that would be a high-quality cordyceps extract.

funny, I have my wife on most of the asthma and migraines supplements, and there is a lot of overlap. her migraines have gone from 10-20 per month down to 1 or 2, and even then they're not debilitating. the asthma has only reduced slightly. but there is also supposed to be a dairy connection and she is a big dairy eater.

you might try the LEF suggestions then cut down on dairy if they're not working

if you've been living with it for this long it doesn't sound like it's severe so i think the supplements would help. my wife's asthma is pretty severe since childhood so she still relies on the occasional albuterol puff

I eat a ton of dairy. Usually in a day: 4-5 cups whole milk, a cup of cottage cheese, and on occasion some Greek yogurt. Cream in my coffee too.

I have allergy onset asthma. When the tree pollen hits in the spring, I start coughing and wheezing. The lungs do not like that pollen. I take zertec daily most of the year and when allergy season hits, I take two. When things get real bad, I will add benadryl to the mix and that seems to quell the majority of it. When wheezing, I do use an albuterol inhaler.

Both pollion/allergy season and the diary are possible culprits.

The Issues started early September which.coincides with me bulking, and adding in extra ammounts of milk.
The issues were lest pronounced/present in the winter months, and just started again as spring rolled around.
In January when I did a mini cut, I cut out all milk and didn't have any breathing issues with even performing HIIT sprints.

I think seasonal change is more likely the issue.

I'll keep this thread updated as I seek further expertise.
