A flavonoid that is found in lemons, limes and grapefruit stimulates the development and recovery of muscle tissue. Pharmacologists at Ewha Womans University in South Korea discovered that hesperidin has an anabolic effect on young muscle cells, forces stem cells to develop into muscle cells and speeds up the recovery of damaged muscle tissue.

hesperidin also acts to destroy free radicals or cancer-producing cells that may be circulating in the body. Various studies have shown that hesperidin treatment can help stop the growth and spread of cancer cells particularly those involving the breast and prostate. Being strong antioxidant it destroys free radicals and also balances cholesterol levels, also it releives muscle cramps.

Hmm. Time for me to mosey over to Ehwa and volunteer as a subject. Though I'll likely be investigating the potency of the place's well-known abundance of eye candy.

Guess I'll start using lemon on everything again.
Glad I work in the lemons and have a grapefruit tree.

Haha.

I am generally a sceptic about this sort of stuff, too, but the more exposure I get to traditional Oriental medicine here, the more I become persuaded of its efficacy and benefits. It doesn't have the sort of "kick" or immediate effect of the strong, often toxic, synthetic Western pharmaceuticals, but a lot of it seems to work. It's usually more like a tonic that is designed to get your body gradually working differently and maintaining that change for the long term. I certainly had good results with the rehab of my ruptured L4 and L5 disks with such a tonic, and I've become a fan of acupuncture for more immediate effects - I've seen my blood pressure drop instantly from critical hyper levels t near normal with just the insertion of three or four needles in the right places. Ditto the instantaneous release of muscles stuck in painful contraction from accumulated stress, either psychological or physical or both.
