So a link to a very interesting article made its way to my inbox. article is here:
Vitamins: Synthetic vs. vs. Plant-Based (https://blog.botanicalcraft.com/vitamins-synthetic-vs-natural-vs-plant-based/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=primordial_email&utm_campaign=palm_fruit_launch)

It's an interesting read and worth the time. Initially I thought he was going to argue against supplements. but it seems what he is advocating is lower doses and more natural forms of vitamins, which to me makes sense. I've mostly gotten away from megadoses of everything in favor of more reasonable doses and better balanced formulas (i.e. no high dose alpha tocopherol). Among his 2 recommended products (which you have to subscribe to get), I think the Natural Factors one fudges the definition of 'non-synthetic' a bit. the B vitamins are produced by microbial fermentation but you still have e.g. folic acid, not the best form. the other ones seem to be better forms.

what the article did convince me of is the necessity to take some kind of antioxidant- and nutrient-rich whole food supplement. has anyone tried Botanical Craft's palm fruit extract? it looks great
