It is hard to say to be honest. It depends on what form of depression you have and the source of it.
I have major clinical depression, and it requires medication to regulate. A while back when I was pulled from meds for a while, I tried SAMe, and it had a minor helping effect. Nothing that I could rely on fully, but something was there to help a bit.
Taking it with my medication had a stronger effect. Don't know the reasons, but it was stronger.
The best answer is to try it. 200mg/day for a couple weeks and if you don't feel anything, kick it up to 400mg/day for a couple more weeks. If you don't feel anything after that, it may not be for you.
It also helps a bit with liver health and joint health, so those can be added bonuses.
If you can bench more than you can squat, you're doing it wrong!
personally, I hate SAMe. made me feel manic. I dumped the rest of the bottle in the garbage disposal after 2 doses-- and shit is not cheap. that's how much it did not agree with my neurochemistry
