The biggest thing with tinnitus is that the more it bothers you emotionally, the louder it will get. When you’re focusing on it (trying to figure out if it’s getting softer or louder) you’re telling your brain that this is important, and it responds by increasing the sensitivity to that sound, aka making it louder.
Also yes, the more anxious you are, the louder the tinnitus gets.
Your tinnitus might or might not go away on this journey, but you can get to where you don’t notice it at all. I put in earplugs (which make tinnitus way louder) every night, and I still don’t even think about or notice my tinnitus.
