The activity of methyl clostebol was examined by researchers at Sterling Winthrop in the 1960s. There's also some evidence that methyl clostebol was experimented with by the East German doping machine, under the moniker STS 482. Dimethazine is a homodimer: a chemical compound made from two identical subunits, joined together by a bond. Methylandrostanol was first synthesized by researchers at Organon in the Netherlands in 1961. The cholestatic effect of this and other steroids in rabbits was assayed by Harry Lennon at GD Searle & Co. in 1966, and methylandrostanol was the only 17a-methyl compound not to increase BSP retention (a marker of hepatotoxicity). Patrick Arnold made some for non-commercial purposes in 2005, and in 2009 it was first released as a supplement as "Protodrol" by iForce Nutrition.
Structure and Function:
Methylandrostanol differs from mestanolone (methyl DHT) by the lack of a 3-ketone (carbonyl function), once thought to be necessary for anabolic or androgenic activity. In vitro experiments performed in 1972 with rabbit liver suggested that the body may be capable of metabolically oxygenating methylandrostanol, meaning that it may function to some extent as a pro-drug to mestanolone.
